Care

So that your new clothes retain their unconventional look and properties, we have some tips for you. Wash inside out on a gentle cycle at low temperatures. The maximum recommended washing temperature is 30°C. Using detergents for dark clothes will help keep the color saturated. Always follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label.

The clothes are not pre-washed, so there may be slight fading of the colors during the first wash before the color stabilization process takes place. Don't worry, it won't affect the color saturation.

Sportswear: washing, drying and care

Technical fabrics need different care from ordinary cotton. Elastane and sublimation prints don't tolerate high temperatures, and fabric softener reduces their performance. Always check the label of the specific product as well, the manufacturer's guidance takes precedence over general recommendations.

Rash guards and compression wear

Rash guards are made from elastane and polyester. These materials react badly to heat and to fabric softener, which clogs the fibres and limits moisture wicking.

Washing
  • Wash after every session, sweat attacks the elastic fibres.
  • Use cold water or a delicate cycle up to 30 °C.
  • Wash inside out, this protects the sublimation print.
  • Skip fabric softener, it reduces moisture wicking and the fabric's performance.
  • No bleach, it damages both the elastane and the colours.
Drying
  • Air dry, inside out and in the shade.
  • No tumble dryer, heat damages the elastic fibres.
  • Don't dry on a radiator or in direct sun.
Don't iron rash guards. Heat damages the sublimation print and the fabric doesn't need ironing.
When to replace it: the fabric has lost its stretch and no longer sits close · see-through or worn patches · seams coming apart · odour that stays after washing.
Fight shorts

MMA, Muay Thai and Vale Tudo shorts are usually polyester or microfibre, often with a sublimation print. The approach is much the same as with rash guards.

  • Wash inside out, in cold water or on a delicate cycle.
  • Fasten the velcro before washing, otherwise it catches on the rest of the load.
  • Untie the drawstring at the waist and don't leave it knotted.
  • No fabric softener and no bleach.
  • Air dry, a tumble dryer damages both the fabric and the print.
On shorts with side slits and elastic panels, keep an eye on the seams. That's exactly where the greatest strain occurs during training.
T-shirts, hoodies, joggers and leggings
Cotton t-shirts and hoodies
  • Wash inside out, especially with a print or embroidery.
  • Choose the temperature by the label, a lower one limits cotton shrinkage.
  • Dry hoodies laid out flat, hanging stretches the shoulders.
  • Never iron directly over the print, lay a thin cloth over it.
Joggers and leggings
  • Wash leggings with elastane inside out and at a low temperature.
  • No fabric softener, on leggings it reduces both stretch and moisture wicking.
  • Don't tumble dry, elastane is damaged by heat.
  • Close zips and untie drawstrings before washing.
Don't wash garments containing elastane together with velcro and hard pieces of equipment. The fibres snag easily and tear.
Sauna suits

Sauna suits are made from non-breathable materials, most often PVC, nylon or neoprene. They are washed differently from ordinary sportswear and usually can't handle a washing machine.

Cleaning
  • Rinse the inside with lukewarm water after every use.
  • Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent.
  • Only machine wash if the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
  • Don't wring or twist, this damages both the material and the bonded seams.
Drying and storage
  • Dry inside out so the inner surface dries too.
  • No tumble dryer, radiator or direct sun.
  • Only put it away completely dry, damp it goes mouldy on the inside.
  • Store it flat or loosely hung, not folded for long periods.
Always use a sauna suit according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have any health concerns, speak to a doctor or your coach before using it.
When to replace it: cracks in the surface layer · unbonded or leaking seams · perished elastic at the waist and cuffs.
Caps
  • Caps don't belong in the washing machine, the drum warps both the brim and the crown.
  • Clean by hand in lukewarm water with a soft brush.
  • Pay the most attention to the sweatband, that's where sweat collects.
  • Dry at room temperature over something rounded so it keeps its shape.
  • Don't dry on a radiator or in the sun, the colours fade and the brim warps.
Don't soak embroidered caps for long. The backing layer under the embroidery can soften and the stitching then pulls out of shape.
How to get the smell out of technical fabrics

Polyester and elastane hold odour more than cotton. Bacteria settle into the fibres and an ordinary wash won't necessarily remove them completely.

  • Wash as soon as possible after training, not after days sitting in your bag.
  • Leave out the fabric softener, it settles into the fibres and seals the smell in.
  • For stubborn odour, soaking in cold water with vinegar before washing helps.
  • Use a detergent made for sportswear.
  • Don't overfill the machine, the load has to rinse properly.
Don't use more detergent than recommended. Residue left in the fibres makes the smell worse, not better.
Kids' clothing
  • How you wash it depends on the fabric, not the size, the same rules apply as for adults.
  • Choose a detergent suitable for sensitive skin, without fabric softener.
  • Wash new items before they are worn for the first time.
  • Check the size every season, a tight rash guard restricts movement.
  • Set up a routine after training, children won't take things out of the bag on their own.
What to avoid with sportswear
  • Fabric softener on anything technical, it reduces moisture wicking
  • Tumble drying anything with elastane
  • High wash temperatures and chlorine bleach
  • Ironing over prints and embroidery
  • Leaving sweaty clothes in a closed bag
  • Drying coloured and printed items in direct sun
  • Washing technical clothing together with velcro-fastened equipment
How long clothing lasts depends on how often you train, the type of strain and the material. Poor care shortens it considerably. A loose seam is worth stitching before it opens up completely.
