Starting Age and Early Training – When to Begin Combat Sports
When should a child start combat sports?
When is the right time for a child to start combat sports? The answer depends on age, readiness, and the specific discipline. Combat sports can support coordination, discipline, and self-confidence — especially when a child begins at the right stage and with appropriate training intensity.
Some disciplines, such as judo or karate, are suitable from around 4–5 years old and introduce movement in a playful and controlled way. Older children can gradually move toward more demanding sports such as boxing, MMA, or Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ).
